DELMAR - Frederick N. Thomsen, 74, beloved husband and best friend to his wife, Kate (Reilly), father to Daniel and Patrick, passed away peacefully after a battle with Glioblastoma. He left this world for the next on Saturday, July 30, 2022. Fred is also survived by his brother, Robert Thomsen (Eileen); sister, Barbara Whitney (Edson), many cousins and 24 nieces and nephews.
Fred graduated from Vincentian Institute in 1965, Stony Brook in 1969, earned his Master's at New Paltz in 1976, and his CAS from Syracuse University in 1989. He began his career as a math teacher and retired as a superintendent.
Those who knew Fred best knew him as a man of integrity and honesty. He was a champion of teachers and students, and a very capable negotiator on their behalf. People enjoyed his dry sense of humor and his passion for and amazing knowledge of sports, especially Syracuse University, the Buffalo Bills, and the Giants. Fred started his career as a teacher in Richfield Springs in 1969. After teaching for four years, Fred got a job at the Times Herald Record in Middletown so he could try his hand at sports reporting as he had done in college. He covered sports events in the lower mid-Hudson area. One favorite memory was flying with the West Point football team to a game in No. Carolina. He enjoyed every minute of writing, but he also realized that sports reporting was not the career he wanted after all.
Fred returned to teaching at No. Syracuse High School and within a few years decided to pursue an administrative career. Geneva City Schools was his journey's first stop where he was an Assistant to the Superintendent. He left there and went west to Cattaraugus Central Schools where he remained for almost five years as their Superintendent. From there he went to Fabius-Pompey and led that district as Superintendent for eight years. The last stop in his administrative journey was East Syracuse-Minoa. He retired from that district in June, 2005.
Kate and Fred returned home to Albany in late 2020 and were warmly welcomed by family and old friends. On June 24th they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family, thankful that they were together to mark their important milestone.
All are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands immediately after.
