Frederick William Walker, 92, husband to the late Florence Hoagland Walker of Altamont, passed away comfortably and in the company of family on July 12, 2024.
Born February 1, 1932 in Hoboken, NJ, he was the son of Frederick Hobart Walker and Marie Simpson Walker.
“Bill” had an exuberant childhood on the Jersey Shore before attending Lafayette College for a BS in Chemistry, followed by a Masters in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. After a period with DuPont in Georgia, where he started the courtship of his future wife, Florence Ann Hoagland, he moved to Schenectady, NY and started his career with General Electric at the Knolls Atomic Power Lab in Niskayuna. In his 30+ years, in addition to taking many young protégés under his wing, he led the efforts in the development and publishing of the Chart of the Nuclides.
Bill was an active outdoorsman and was a talented fly fisherman. He repeatedly dragged his entire family up the high peaks of the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, camped in the pouring rain, and even floated them down river rapids in rafts and canoes.
