ROTTERDAM- George A. Newton, 82, of Rotterdam, entered into eternal rest with his devoted wife of 63 years by his side, on Friday February 15, 2008 at the Northwoods Rehabilitation Facility in Niskayuna after an extended illness.
George was born on May 27, 1925 in Brandt Lake and was the son of the late Clinton and Lena Roblee Newton. He served in the US Army during WWII. For over 34 years, George was employed as a steam fitter at General Electric Company, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Iroquois Rod & Gun Club and Rotterdam Elks # 2157. George was a member of Woodlawn Reformed Church in Schenectady. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Along with his wife, they spent many summers at Minerva Lake in the Adirondacks. George was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family and many friends will miss his warm smile, kind words, his unique sense of humor. To know him was to love him. He was predeceased by his daughter Janet in 1980 and his sister Magdalena Culver in 2003.
George is survived by his wife, Anne Hickock Newton whom he married November 4, 1944; his son James Newton and his wife Sally of Schenectady; granddaughter, Rebecca Newton Hanford and her husband Lee of Leland, NC; brother and sister in law, Richard and Roberta Hickok and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday morning at 11:00 at New Comer Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Sunday from 3 to 7 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
A special thank you to Rev. Paul Ferenczy for his support and prayers during George's illness. Additionally, the family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, kind deeds and wishes. We are truly grateful for the care and help from all personnel at Ellis Hospital and Northwoods Rehabilitation Center. The Northwoods staff demonstrated care and dignity that exemplified the utmost respect for George and his family.
