Colonie- George D. Hines, 88, of Colonie, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Eddy Ford Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Jersey Shore, PA and was the son of the late George H. and Alma Hines. George is a US Navy veteran of WWII. He served on the USS Proteus in the Pacific Theatre and was present at Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender. George was employed by the railroad for over 35 years. He worked at the West Albany shops, Harmon, NY and in Selkirk before retiring in 1979. He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Union #83. George was a longtime member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and held many positions of responsibility throughout the years. He belonged to several softball and bowling leagues and has been a lifelong baseball fan.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Jane Sloan Hines. He is the devoted father of George David (Joan) Hines, Gary (Jo-Anne) Hines, Carolyn (John) Peck, John (Sharon) Hines, Peter (Mary) Hines, and Wayne (Catherine) Hines. He is the brother of Jack Hines and Betty Olson and the cherished grandfather of Jessica, Jeffrey (Jessica), Scott, Matthew (Tara), Adam, Brian, Laura, Andrew and Grace. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 10:00 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 63 Mountain View Ave, Colonie. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 8pm at NewComer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery.
