George A. Degonzague

January 30, 1926 — October 27, 2017

George Alexander DeGonzague, passed away on Friday, Oct.27, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Albany January 30, 1926. Son of Matilda (Benedict) and Edwin DeGonzague of Canada.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Rose (Marciano) DeGonzague who he cared for selflessly until her untimely passing. Father of George (Carolyn Fender), Michael (Kirsten Hamilton) and much beloved grandchildren Ryan, Kyle, Isabella and great-grandchild Ezekiel. Partner and fiancée of Illa Pickett who shared his life lovingly for 18 years. He was predeceased by 8 siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.

George was a kind and generous man who loved his family deeply. He was engaging, charming, witty, and a loving dedicated family man.

At the age of 17, he joined the US Navy during WW II. He served in the Pacific on the USS Emery, Destroyer 28 which became an enduring part of his memories. He was awarded the Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal (2 Stars).

George liked to tell stories of his early years when he did numerous jobs to help support his family. He delivered papers, was a theatre usher (because he loved the uniform), delivered ice, was a bike messenger, worked on the railroad, and was a skilled upholster and painter. He worked 30 years at Tobin Packing and then retired with the Albany Schools after 10 Years. He was very young at heart and was often referred to as the "fountain of youth". He never seemed to age. George enjoyed bowling, golf and art. His stories of his life experiences were many and always entertaining. He loved his life. What stands out about George was his respect for others, his kindness, his hopefulness, his smile and mostly his love of family. We are blessed to have shared his wonderful life.
