George William Delamar, Jr.

George William Delamar, Jr. was born October 19, 1941 to the late George William "Bill" Delamar and Ruby Hinkson Delamar in Manhattan, New York. He was called to his eternal home on Friday, February 19, 2021.

George received his education in the New York City public schools and attended Harpur College in Binghamton, New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

After college, George was hired by New York State and moved to Albany, New York. On November 21, 1970, when George married Sylvia, two families became one, as he brought two daughters, Denise and Leatrice, and Sylvia brought three children, Sheila, Sabrina, and Frankie. The family became complete with the additions of Shelley and Sophia. George and Sylvia recently celebrated fifty years of marriage.

George and Sylvia united with the Friendship Baptist Church in Schenectady, New York where he served faithfully as a member of the Trustee Ministry. George also served in the Media Ministry and the Men's Fellowship, he sang with the Echoes Male Chorus, and filled the role of bookkeeper.

George worked in Human Resources at several New York State agencies, including: the Education Department, Social Services and the Office of Mental Health. After more than 35 years, George retired in 2000. In his retirement, he enjoyed serving on the Board of the NYS Education Department's Professional Assistance Program, working with the Office of Management Confidential Employees, and serving on the Board of Two Together, an after-school reading program. George was a proud member of the Albany Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Ruby Delamar, and his stepmother, Mary Delamar; his uncle, EJ Hinkson, brother, Andre Sinclair, brother-in-law, Larry Griffin, son-in-law, Calvert Bowie, and grandson Jamil Gaston.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sylvia Delamar; seven children: Sheila Etienne (Malik), Franklin Washington, Jr. (Sylvan), and Sabrina Bowie, of Schenectady, New York; Denise Delamar, of Maryland, Leatrice Davis (Donald), of Albany, New York, Shelley Alcinay (Marc), and Sophia Delamar, of Niskayuna, New York; three sisters, Marcia Griffin, of Southfield, Michigan, Agnes Blackmon and Wanda Sinclair, of Brooklyn, New York; his Aunt, Shirley Roberts and cousin, Minna Dunn of Long Island, beloved nieces and nephews and dear cousins in Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia, 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren he dearly loved.

Visiting hours will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A celebration of his life will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 26 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Gathering size, within our chapels will be based on the most current NYS occupancy requirements. Masks are required, and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside of our chapels. Burial will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna. Memorial contributions may be made in the name of George Delamar, to: Friendship Baptist Church, Schenectady, New York or Kappa Charities of the Greater Capital Region, Inc.
