George Murray Dempsey: 1950-2024
George Murray Dempsey, a lifelong athlete and cherished family man, passed away on June 23, 2024, in Clifton Park, NY, at the age of 74 with his loving family by his side.
Born on May 26, 1950, to the late Mary Potter Dempsey and Murray Dempsey in Troy, NY, George's life was marked by his exceptional achievements, both in business and personal endeavors, as well as his dedication to his family and community.
George attended St. Augustine’s Elementary School and Catholic Central High School in Troy, NY. He attended Paul Smith’s College in Saranac Lake, NY majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management and SUNY Albany earning his bachelor’s in business administration (B.A.).
In August 1967, at the age of 17, George became the youngest person to swim the length of Lake George, a remarkable accomplishment that brought him national recognition and showcased his determination and tenacity. This early achievement set the tone for a life characterized by ambition and perseverance.
With his open water swimming days behind him, he was equally passionate about working out daily, as well as competitively playing tennis, golf and later, pickleball. Many of his closest bonds and friendships were formed doing the athletic activities he loved most.
George's entrepreneurial spirit led him to a successful career in business. Over the years, he built and managed several ventures, earning a reputation for his keen insight, innovative thinking, and unwavering work ethic. His contributions to the business community were significant, and his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him.
George is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine. Their marriage was a testament to their deep bond, mutual respect, and unwavering support for each other. Together, they raised four children: Jeremy Dempsey (Lauren d.), Christopher Dempsey (Kim), Michael Dempsey, and Jenny Dempsey. George is also survived by his grandson, Christoper Dempsey. George was a devoted father who took immense pride in his children's achievements and was a constant source of encouragement and guidance.
George's warm personality, sense of humor, and generous spirit made him a beloved figure among family and friends. He had a unique ability to connect with people and leave a lasting impression with his kindness and sincerity.
On Wednesday July 10, 2024, a visitation period providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together and honor his memory will occur from 10am-12pm followed by Mass at 12pm to celebrate George's life at Corpus Christi Church, 2001 US Route 9, Round Lake NY 12151.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George's name to either the American Cancer Society or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
