George Legorius

January 19, 1926 — August 25, 2014

COLONIE – George Legorius, 88, of Colonie and The Capital Living Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, died Monday, August 25, 2014 at Ellis Hospital with his loving family by his side. He is the cherished husband of Rosemary Mauro Legorius and the beloved father of Christine Legorius of Colonie.

George was the son of the late Nicholas and Bessie (Vomvila) Legorius, both of Greece and Niskayuna; brother of Katherine Fifield of Thonotosassa, Florida, Joan Contompasis of Niskayuna, Jerry Legorius of Glenville and Frieda Legorius of Niskayuna; brother of the late Madeline Hourigan, Amelia Legorius and Demetra Legorius; brother-in-law of Rose Legorius, Margaret Wooding, Nickolas Mauro, the late James Hourigan, Chester Fifield, Harry Contompasis, Richard Wooding, Marie and Robert Byrnes and Jean Baker; son-in-law of the late Margaret Tenace Mauro and Nickolas Mauro. George is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and their families, all of whom he loved dearly.

George was a proud World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a member of the American Legion. For over 35 years, George was a bus driver for Greyhound Lines, retiring in 1986 after safely driving over 4 million miles. He was the recipient of numerous safe driving awards and formed many valuable and lifelong friendships with his passengers and co-workers. After "retirement," George continued to happily work for D&A Delivery Service in Schenectady and also at Auggie Greco's Getty gas station in Albany. He was a retired volunteer member of the Grand Boulevard Fire Company in Niskayuna. George enjoyed volunteering at his church's annual Grecian festival and at the church bingo program. In the 1970's, he was President of Colonie Miss Softball America.

George was an enthusiastic cook and was especially skilled at making soup. Among his many loves were God, his church, his family and friends, the Marines, his house of over 50 years that he helped build, his pick-up truck, his dune buggy that he built, cars, the New York Giants, music, singing, a good party, laughing, joking, tinkering around the house, fixing things, animals (especially his beagle and bunnies), helping others, his Mickey Mouse watch, his Greyhound diamond retirement ring, his ukulele and in his later years, his soft, blue reclining chair. He loved his wife and daughter with intense passion and expressed his love to them every day in so many ways. George was a fantastic husband and father, and a fun-loving, funny, compassionate, loyal man. George was a people person and had a charming personality. He embraced life to the fullest and all of the people in it. He will be missed immeasurably.

Special thanks to the dedicated staff at Capital Living Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, all of whom lovingly cared for their "Georgie Porgie" like he was their own. Also, thanks to all of George's health care providers throughout the years, as well as the staff at Ellis Hospital.
