George S. Cushing

April 1, 1920 — December 19, 2011

ALBANY – George Stanley Cushing, 91, of Albany was welcomed into the Kingdom of God on Monday December 19, 2011.

He was born April 1, 1920 to Polish immigrants, Jacob and Nellie Cushing in Albany. George left school after attending the ninth grade to help support his family. On October 14, 1940 he again felt the need to help so he walked into the Albany Armory and enlisted in the US Army, 10th Infantry Regiment. He served heroically for five years in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

After the war, he went to work for the government in Pennsylvania and eventually transferred to another base in Connecticut in 1966. George returned to Albany after his retirement in 1988 spending much of his time puttering around his home and his yard. He met the love of his life Joan Coons and was married on June 30, 1962. They spent the next 49 years together raising four sons and three grandchildren.

George is survived by his wife Joan, sons John and his wife Kim, Timothy, Stephen, Matthew and his fiancée Josie; grandchildren, Gabriel, Kasey and Stanislaw.
