Albany ~
George R. Wilkes, Jr., 73, of Guilderland, passed away on April 6, 2018, at St. Peter's Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Albany, NY, on February 24, 1945, and was the son of the late George R. and Anne P. Wilkes.
He graduated from Albany High School in 1963 where he co-captained the varsity football team as a runningback and pitched for the varsity baseball team. George was a liberal arts major at St. Lawrence University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and later attended State University of New York Albany. Mr. Wilkes worked at the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance until his retirement.
He was an accomplished athlete, food enthusiast, avid handicapper, and a lover of animals. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, boating, fishing, and summer vacations in the Adirondacks with his family, who remember him for his selfless generosity and playful sense of humor.
George was the beloved husband of Cheryl S. Wilkes for over 46 years. He was the devoted father of Brent A. Wilkes and his wife Angela of McLean, Virginia; Rebecca T. Wilkes of Guilderland; and Carolyn A. Wilkes of Guilderland. George was the brother of Christopher and Barton Wilkes; and was proud of his two grandsons George and John and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie, where a service of remembrance will begin at 6 pm when friends and family will be invited to share memories of George.
