COLONIE – Gerald A. Spath Sr., 71, of Colonie, passed away on Thursday January 13, 2011 at his residence. He was born in South Bronx, NY on February 25, 1939 and is the son of the late Frank and Dorothea Spath.
Jerry served in the US Army from 1963 through 1965. He was firefighter with the City of Albany for 45 years. Jerry was a longtime member of the Fire Department Honor Guard and participated in numerous, wakes, funerals, parades and government functions. He was a member of the Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion Post and the Albany Fire Department Retirees.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Philomena Barbato Spath; his devoted children, Gerald Spath Jr., Antoinette Van Hoesen, Marietta (Thomas) Billings, Michael Van Hoesen and Tina Taubman. He is the cherished grandfather of Jacqueline, Anthony, David, Zachary, Cherie, Chantel, Jeffrey, Aubrey, Kristy and Laura. He is the brother of Frank (Deborah) Spath, Jeanne (Jack) Hicks, Dolores Bollinger, Carol (Earl) Stafford and the late Philip Spath, Anna Knoll and Josephine Spallone. Jerry is the dear friend of Thomas Duell, Richard Edwards, Donna Bloomfield, and Dick Edwards. He is also survived by 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with Departmental honors will be Wednesday morning at 9:00 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie then to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, State St. Albany at 10:00. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be private at Saratoga National VA Cemetery.
