Glenville- Gerald W. Barr, 73, passed away Wednesday, May 4,2016. He was the son of the late Gerald D. and Dorothy Barr. Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Barr.
Gerald served in the United States Army from 1964-1970, & the National Guard from 1978-1982. While in the military Gerald served many roles: Military Police in Viet Nam, 808th Engineering Battalion, Team Leader in the Forest Fighting Unit, NCOIC Heavy Equipment Movement and Deployment - all in Alaska, chauffer for a Two Star General and Special Bereavement Chauffer at Arlington National Cemetery.
Gerald retired from the NYS OMRDD and most recently was a Veterans Advocate for the Center for Independence.
Throughout his life, Gerald did significant volunteer work for which he received many commendations and awards: The Prison Strike of 1979, Winter Olympics 1980 serving with the NYS Police in their security division, Security Director of the Schenectady Air Museum Air Show, SAS Supervisor, Patriot Hills Organization, Jezreel International, Veterans Miracle Center, Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, Veterans Hospital and the Red Cross Disaster Relief Team during the World Trade Center disaster and Hurricane Katrina.
In addition to his wife Ginny, Gerald is survived by his step-daughter Julie Behrens (Steven Fuhrmeister) and his beloved grandsons, Devin and Liam. Gerald is also survived by Anthony Dyer, who has been like a son to him.
Gerald is predeceased by his sister Judy Reed and his service dog, Askim. He is survived by Judy's husband Jim Reed, his siblings Karen, Wayne, Donald, two daughters, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would also like to give their heartfelt thanks to friends, neighbors and health care providers for their constant support over the past eight years.

Calling hours will be held Monday, May 9, 2016 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at New Comer Funeral, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 10:30am at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
