COLONIE – Gerhard E. Gerstenberger, 77, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Gerhard was born on June 3, 1931 in Jamaica, Long Island, NY, but grew up in Leipzig, Germany from 1934 to 1947, and was the son of the late Hans Otto and Anna (Madauss) Gerstenberger.
Gerhard was a self-employed cabinet maker. He was a member and officer of Schuetzen Park (German American Club) and a coach of the Colonie Soccer Club. He enjoyed playing soccer and tennis, dancing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Gerhard is survived by his children, Ernie Gerstenberger, Renate (Terry) Criscone, and Rudi (Mary Ann) Gerstenberger; his brothers, Hans Gerstenberger, Otto (Nancy) Gerstenberger and Karl (Charlotte) Gerstenberger; his sister, Tutzi Miller; his grandchildren, Christy, Tonia and Cassandra Criscone and Paul and John Gerstenberger; his longtime loving companion, Inge Glidden; his former spouse, Irene Pourier; his sister-in-law, Marianne Gerstenberger; his brother-in-law, Erich Thiele; and several nieces and nephews with special thanks to Karen Gerstenberger. He was predeceased by his brothers, Hermann and Helmut Gerstenberger and his sister, Charlotte Thiele.
A humanistic service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt.155-south of Central Ave.). Calling hours will be held prior from 4 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Schuetzen Park, 32 Cherry Ave., Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Gerhard E. Gerstenberger.
