GUILDERLAND – Gisele Menart Ballschmieder, 92, passed away at Ellis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on September, 4 2014, joining her beloved "Charlie" who predeceased her in 2007.
Gisele was born on July 30, 1922 in Paris, France. At the age of 23, she met and fell in love with her handsome American soldier, Charlie. After the war, Gisele journeyed to America with their infant daughter, Josiane, and settled in Buffalo, New York.
Gisele taught herself English by listening to the radio and looking at the newspaper. She was proud of her American citizenship and celebrated the anniversary of it the way most people celebrate their birthdays. There was always a bouquet from Charlie to celebrate the occasion. Gisele had an encyclopedic knowledge of history, art, music and politics.
She is survived by 8 children: Josiane, Charleen, Michelle, Kenneth, Roxanne, Donna, Wendy and Darby and their spouses; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, dear friends and neighbors Emma and Fern, Dottie, Mike and Debra, and Renee and John.
The family would like to thank the staff of Ellis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their loving care of Gisele.
