Gordon E. Howe

November 19, 1942 — January 11, 2023

Gordon Emory Howe was born on November 19, 1942 and died on January 11, 2023.

Gordon was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Grace (Duly) and Archie A. Howe of Westwood, Massachusetts.

Gordon grew up in Westwood, MA. for part of each year, and Eau Gallie, FL. the rest of the year, as his father had businesses in both locations. He went to school in each location for the months he lived there, and graduated from Westwood High School in 1960. He fully enjoyed his youth in both of his home areas, and knew about living both in the North and in the South.

Gordon has an older sister, Margery Eramo, and is predeceased by an older brother, Richard. He also had a brother, Alvin, who died in infancy.

Gordon met his future wife, Susanne Carolus, in 1962. They were just 17 and 19 years old at that time. In 1964 they married, and spent their honeymoon in Bermuda. They lived in Albany, New York while Gordon attended Hudson Valley Community College, and he continued his engineering education at Union College. He graduated from Union and started working as an engineer for the New York State Health Department Air Pollution Control Division. That division became part of the New York State Environmental Conservation Department, from which Gordon retired in 2003. Retirement became the opportunity for many enjoyable occupations around his home, such as woodworking, building projects and home repairs, baking, and tending to his garden. He and Susanne enjoyed traveling and visiting family during those years, too.

Their greatest adventure was raising their five children: Amy (Robert Helm), David (Shelly), Laura Grace (Brian Priestley), Jennifer (Matthew Rider) and Timothy (Kelly). As if that wasn't enough excitement, those five families added ten grandsons and five granddaughters and one great granddaughter to the family: Rebecca (Clark Egger), John, Jackson, Thomas, Nathan, Benjamin, Landon, Sam, Lyla Rae, Liam, Kaelyn, Elise, Jacob, Audrey and Danny. Rebecca and Clark have a daughter, Vivian, who is Gordon and Susanne's great grandchild. Gordon also cherished a beloved niece, Tina Dean, who is an integral part of their family.

Gordon lived a Christian life, and his foundation and hope were based on the calm reassurance that came from his unwavering belief in the Word of God. Gordon's faith grew throughout the years of his life. He was a quiet, steady influence, and his life spoke to all those who knew him, and depended on him.

He was well loved by his family and his friends, and shared his warm smile with all. He is missed by those who knew him and loved him, but are comforted when thinking of his eternal hope and rest.
