Grace E. Pappas

April 2, 1929 — October 7, 2022

The Pappas family sadly announces the passing of their beloved mother, Grace (DonVito) Pappas, 93 , October 7th, 2022.

Born in Albany, N.Y. 1929, she was predeceased by her husband William Pappas, her parents Rose and Nicholas DonVito, and her siblings, Michael, Esther Roddy and John. She is survived by her four children, William, Sheila, and Marcia (Charlie) and Roseanne; grandchildren, Isaac Bookheim (Annalee), Patrick Pappas (Brittni) and Deana Pappas; great grandchildren Brendan and Nicholas Bookheim, Jacob Ekmalian , Charles and Wesley Pappas, and her sister Elizabeth Cregan.

Grace grew up on Madison Avenue, an area now occupied by the Empire State Plaza. A 1946 graduate of Philip Schuyler, she was voted most popular and the best partner on the dance floor. She continued to enjoy dancing throughout her life and during her senior years as a member of the Timeless Tappers.

As a young mother she raised her family in Rensselaer, NY. In 1961 she and William purchased a home in South Schodack, where they raised and showed American and Canadian Champion German Shepherd Dogs for more than 20 years, creating Val-Don Kennels. People came from near and far to purchase a quality puppy. She took pride in being an international dog show judge. She was the VP of the Mohawk- Hudson German Shepherd Dog Club and the first lifetime member of its parent club.

A lover of both international and U.S. travel, her favorite destination was Palm Springs, CA where she visited lifelong friends,(Millie and Tom) and met and chatted with actress, Loretta Young. She enjoyed the movies and music of the 1940s. She was also an avid gardener throughout her life.

Grace loved watching her family grow and mature, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, weekends, holidays and birthdays.

The family would like to thank Daniella Filmer for introducing us to Linda Klompas, Moms loving private nurse who cared for our mom with love and kindness. We would also like to thank Beth, Eileen and Cathy, all friends who were there for us during our most difficult time as we cared for our mom in the home of Marcia and Charlie. And last but not least we thank Barbara Levinson, a long time friend of our mother, for being there and sending our mom off with encouraging and loving words.

Grace often expressed gratitude for the care that ARC has provided to her son. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The ARC of Rensselaer County. (www.renarc.org
