Grace Schmitt

COLONIE – Grace M. Schmitt, 76, of Colonie, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Dutch Manor Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born in Albany and was the daughter of the late Donato and Mary Rinaldi Ditonno.
As a young woman, Grace had worked for Albany Public Market, Trading Post and Davis Seed Company. She was a life member and former trustee of the Midway Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Colonie Seniors and Hart Social Club. Amazing Grace, as she was reverently known, enjoyed playing cards, working with beads, jigsaw puzzles, gardening and bingo. She was predeceased in 1996 by her beloved husband of 40 years, William H. Schmitt Sr.
Grace is the beloved mother of William H. Schmitt Jr., MaryGrace (Edwin) Spahn, Nancy Schmitt and Rose Ann (Rick) DiGirolamo. She is the devoted sister of Mary Ditonno, Donato Ditonno and Viola Burnetter. Sister in law of Maryellen Ditonno. Grace is the cherished grandmother of Samuel Schipano Jr., Natalie Schipano, Anthony Voris, Gina Voris, Dillon, Michael and Dustin DiGirolamo. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and dear family friend Kathleen Moro and her family. Grace will be dearly missed by her pet, Domino.
Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 9:30 at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. Colonie. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308 or Bright Horizon Program at Colonie Senior Services, 6 Winners Circle, Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Grace M. Schmitt.
