With family by his side, Gregory F. Spencer, 82, of Albany, NY peacefully transitioned to eternal life on December 15, 2022 at Albany Medical Center after a brief medical event.
Born August 22, 1940 in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late Frederick Spencer and Joan Spencer (nee Stickles).
Affectionately known as "Papa" to his nine grandchildren, Greg loved to share colorful stories about family history – in which he took great pride – and his own youth as a standout athlete at Vincentian Institute and Siena College. Even in his 70's, Greg could pick up a basketball and sink a round of 3-pointers.
Greg had a natural gift for communication. His honesty, enthusiasm, easy demeanor, and good humor were revered by those who knew him – and contributed to his effectiveness in a sales career that spanned the first half of his adult life.
Greg discovered his true purpose, however, as a substance abuse counselor following his own successful recovery from alcoholism at the age of 44. Since then, he dedicated his life to helping other individuals and families coping with addiction. This work continued until his passing. He now leaves a legacy of many lives that have been enriched by his compassion and commitment.
Greg is survived by his two sons Michael and his partner Jennifer of Burlington, VT, and Daniel and his wife Lynn of Colchester, VT; three daughters Sue and her husband Roger of Colchester, VT, Kathleen of Centreville, VA, and Christine and her husband Marco of Burlington, VT; and nine grandchildren: Spencer, Zachary, Megan, Alexandra, Andrew, Kelsey, William, Kendall, and Ava. He is also survived by two sisters Lynn Devane and her husband Charles of Slingerlands, and Mary Ann Spencer of Albany, NY. He is predeceased by his brother Keith Spencer.
A celebration of Greg's life will be planned for the new year.
