SCHENECTADY – Gus M. Redd, 83, was called home September 8, 2011. Born on September 18, 1927 in Twiggs County, Jeffersonville, GA, he was the son of the late Mr. Governor and Mrs. Sarah Mims Redd.
At an early age Gus moved to Macon, GA, where he was educated by the Bibb County Public Schools. He later joined the United States Navy and served in the WWII and Korean Wars. Gus moved to Schenectady in 1954 where he met and married Marion Thomas, who passed in 2000. Gus was one of the first members to join the Bethel AME Church. He served on the Trustee and Usher Boards. Gus was employed as a crane operator for the General Electric Company for 28 years. He retired in 1992.
Gus loved life and lived a full one. He was outspoken, but had a good heart and would do what he could for anyone. He especially loved children and they loved him. Gus also loved the Masonic Order where he served as Past Master of the Tuscan Lodge #85 Free and Accepted Masons, Past Potentate of Al Tabari Temple #121, Past High Priest of Zerrubbabel Chapter #8 RAM, and was a member of the Albany Consistory #90.
Along with his parents and wife, Gus was predeceased by brothers G.V. Redd, James Horace Redd, Carl Redd and Tommy Hughes; sisters Colena Redd Lyles, Henrietta Knight and Beauty Collins.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Harriett Redd; grandson Gus Redd, II; brothers Lewis (Marian) Redd of Baltimore and Daniel Redd of Macon, GA; sisters Mary (Gilbert) Harrell and Rachel Redd of Macon, GA, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie. A viewing will also be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday with a service at 12:00 pm at Bethel AME Church, 540 Mumford Street, Schenectady. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie.
There will be a Prince Hall Masonic service on Thursday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Brothers are requested to assemble at 6:30 pm.
