Harold Herman Dinyer, or "Pete" as known by those who have known him for a long, long time, was born in a basement apartment on 165th street in NYC. No one knows where the nickname came from and now we never will. Pete wouldn't tell. He and his big brother John used to help their father, John, in the various grocery stores and delis that he ran. Days ran 18 hours or more in those years. Before going to high school, the family moved to Bern, NY and worked on a farm before moving to Troy NY.
When WWII came around Harold joined the Navy and was on the USS Randolph CV-15 working on the flight deck as a catapult man, a very dangerous job. His ship was hit by a Kamikaze while anchored at Ulithi on March 11th, but he was saved because he was at a movie showing that evening. 27 others were killed and 105 were injured. After the ship got repaired, they were in support of the invasion of Okinawa. Later, as a part of Admiral Halsey's famed 3rd Fleet, Randolph made a series of strikes up and down the Japanese home islands in preparation for the invasion, which luckily didn't have to happen. Before the end of the year, Harold and his ship completed two trips to the Mediterranean area to return American servicemen from the war.
After the war, returning to Troy, he did a number of things but according to him started the best years of his life when he met his wife to be, Shirley Hamblin. He started it off working for Leslie's Credit Bureau, going to Albany Business College, and then starting a long association with the State of New York, working both in the Transportation Department, and the Tax Department as an accountant. On the side, and over the years, he and his wife dealt in antiques and antique jewelry, doing antique shows throughout the area.
Harold, 90, passed away September 30th, 2015 with his family by his side. He was the son of the late John and Rosa Dinyer.
Harold is survived by his son Stephen (Adriana Gómez Piccolo) Dinyer. He is also survived by his grandson Sam and his brother John Dinyer. Harold is predeceased by his wife Shirley and their son Michael.
