Harold ("Hal") J. Herzog, 93, husband of Marjorie ("Margie") Mann Herzog of Latham, passed away peacefully in the evening of August 24th, 2022 at Albany Medical Center. Born on September 12th, 1928 in Binghamton, New York, he was the son of the late Gottfried Herzog and Myrtle Louise Gage Herzog.
After graduating from Binghamton North High School, Hal joined the 82nd Airborne Division, an elite paratrooper unit, serving two years between WWII and the Korean War. Upon discharge, he used the GI Bill to attend Harpur College (named Triple Cities College at his time of matriculation), where he met Marjorie Mann before enrolling in a graduate program in Geology at the University of Rochester. When Hal and Marge decided to start a family, he took a job in Binghamton at the New York State Highway Department as a civil engineer. While working and raising their growing family, Hal took night classes in order to earn his Professional Engineers license, allowing him to work up the ranks of the State Highway Department, bringing their family to Albany where he ultimately retired.
He is survived by his loving wife Margie and his 4 children: Marianne and her husband Dan of Philadelphia, PA, Joan of Ballston Lake, NY, Andrea and her husband Dave of Saratoga Springs, NY, and John and his husband Don of Troy, NY; 6 grandchildren: Katie of Maui, HI, Robert of Latham, NY, Andrew of South Carolina, Molly of Troy, NY, and Elizabeth and Gabrielle of Saint Paul, MN; He is also survived by 2 great-grandchildren: Theodore and Alphonse, 2 of his siblings: Robert Herzog of Rochester, NY and Peggy-Lou Corino of Binghamton, NY, and by 5 nieces and nephews.
Hal was predeceased by his sister Dorothy Affeldt and her husband Robert Affeldt and by his brother-in-law Fred Corino and sister-in-law Kathy Herzog.
Friends and Family are invited to attend visitation on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 182 Troy Schenectady Rd. Watervliet, NY 12189.
