Harold served in the United States Navy from 1960 until 1964 at which time the destroyer (USS Lloyd Thomas) which he served on was dispatched to participate in the Cuban missile crisis. While in the Navy, he met the love of his life, Virginia (Procyk) Wilson, at a dance at the Brooklyn Navy Yards.
