Harriet Norton

Albany- Harriet S. Norton, 89, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 20, 2006 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peters Hospital surrounded by her family. Born in Mooers, NY she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Cora Anna Sartwell. Harriet received her undergraduate degree from Houghton College, graduating Cum Laude in 1936. She then received her Masters Degree in Education from Syracuse University in 1947. Harriet went on to teach for 16 years in various public schools before taking a position with SUNY Albany as the Professor and Chairman of Latin Education until her retirement in 1977. Following her retirement, Harriet was vital in the formation of the Pineview Christian Academy of Albany where she was Principal from 1977-1980. Some of Harriet's accomplishments were having been listed in the Who's Who in American Education, Directory of American Scholars, Foreign Language, Linguistics, and Philology, the Who's Who of American Women, Leaders in Education and the World Who's Who of Women, 1974. Harriet is predeceased by her beloved husband of 24 years William T. Norton.
Harriet is survived by her two sons, Stanley Norton and wife Ellen of Rotterdam and Robert Norton and wife Jeanette of Elizabethtown, PA; her grandchildren, Stephen, Kristi, Danielle, Jeffrey, Melissa, Jacob, Brianna, Benjamin and her great-grandson Edward, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 25th at 1:00 PM at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory's Garden. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Houghton College, Houghton, NY 14744 in memory of Harriet S. Norton.
