He was born on December 24, 1916 in Berlin, Germany. He and his family immigrated to America in 1925 and he lived until adulthood mostly in NYC and Staten Island.

During his retirement in Virginia he made a large backyard vineyard, grew 8 varieties of grapes, pressed and bottled them. He belonged to the Lions Club and volunteered at the local food bank. Helmut was known for his clever wit and humorous puns and for his love of family.

He is survived by his wife, Emily, his son Theodore (Mary), his son Paul, and his daughter Lisa Zurawicki and predeceased by his youngest daughter, Laura Neumann and his brother, William O. Neumann.
