Gullo, Henry Camillo
Henry Camillo Gullo lived his entire life with high energy and passion. He died on Tuesday, February 24th 2009 in Lexington KY surrounded by his family's love and attention. He was 86.
Henry (or Hank or 'Ceeg') was born on December 29th, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY. He was the youngest of five children born to Gaetano and Antonina Gullo, immigrants from Sicily. Henry remained proud of his family's roots, of his mother's rooftop garden and his father's winemaking.
Henry entered the Army in April of 1943 and was discharged in 1946. Thanks to the GI Bill, he went on to study architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduating, he worked at several NY architecture firms, including Harrison and Abramovitz where he participated in designing aspects of Lincoln Center and Albany's South Mall.
In 1964, Henry married Mary Burke, and two years later they moved to Albany where they raised their three sons, Chris, Geoff, and Bill while Henry worked as an architect at the Department of Environmental Conservation for the next 26 years.
Henry was a charitable, generous man who cared about the world at large. He loved word play and wrote poetry throughout his life. The last 8 years of his life were spent in Lexington KY, minutes away from Mary, his eldest son, and three grandchildren.
He is survived by Mary, their three sons, four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who were close to his heart. In lieu of flowers the family has asked those who wish to remember Henry to make a memorial contribution to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
