COLONIE - Henry "Hank" Landau, 91, passed away peacefully, while surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the Stratton VA Hospital in Albany, NY.
Hank was born in Albany, NY on June 10, 1929, son of the late James C. Landau, Sr. and Maude Mayer Landau. He was very proud to have been a Philip Schuyler High School graduate and most proud to have been a member of the Sheet Metal Worker's Local Union #83 since 1948. Hank served on the Executive Board and the Negotiating Committee prior to becoming a Business Representative in 1960. In 1967 he became President Business Manager of Local #83 until 1984 at which time he was selected to the CEO post of Secretary-Treasurer of the NY State Building and Construction Trades Council consisting of 15 different trades and 210,000 union hard hats. In 1991 he retired. Hank was in the US Navy 1945-46 and participated in two atomic bomb tests called "Operation Crossroads" at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Pacific Theater.
While in public life Hank served on a number of trade and public service councils including Vice President, Metropolitan Association of Sheet Metal Workers; Vice President, NY State Council of Sheet Metal Workers; President, NY State Union Label Service Trades; Secretary-Treasurer, Tri-Cities Building & Construction Trades Council; Chairman of the Board, Northeastern NY Safety & Health Council; Regional Chairman, Jobs & Energy Independence; Board Member and Chairman, Albany Vocational Advisory Council; Board of Directors, Northeastern NY Alliance of Business; Chairman, Capital Region Business Promotion Plan; Board of Directors, Capital Region Technology Development Council; Capital District Labor Religion Coalition. Hank was appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo to serve on the Public Works Advisory Board for NY State.
Hank was very happily married to Carol (Reichling) Landau of Schenectady for 59 years and had five wonderful children; Lorelei (Mark) Landau of Clifton Park, NY, Wayne (Elizabeth) Landau of New York, NY, Eric Landau of Schenectady, NY, Claudia (John) Meyer of Albany, NY, and Brian (Maureen) Landau of North East, Maryland. He is survived by seven grandchildren; Aren, Leanora, Christina, Jennifer, Sarah, Katie, and Riley. Also survived by a host of relatives throughout the nation.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Gathering size within our chapels will be based on the most current NYS occupancy requirements. Masks are required, and social distancing is to be observed inside and outside of our chapels.
