Herbert Hymes

d. September 24, 2007

Herbert (Herbie) Hymes entered into eternal life on Monday, September 24, 2007 at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born Christmas Day 1926, in Glasco, NY, Herb was first a gift to his parents, Herbert and Sarah Boler Hymes, and later to all whom he would meet.
After graduating from Saugerties High School in 1944, he enlisted in Army Air Corps, serving in WWII. Herb earned a certificate in auto mechanics from the NYS Veterans' Vocational School in 1948, a skill he used and shared with his family for the next 59 years. Herb moved to Albany in 1946, where he would make his home for the next 61 years. On July 29th 1951, Herbert married his beloved wife of 53 years, Doris M. Anthony.
Herb was one of the hardest working men you'd ever meet: employed by John W. McGrath Corp. for 43 years, where he was more commonly known as "Beaver," the Albany Fire Department for 24 years, and Vogel Van and Storage for 20, while owning and operating a dump truck business.
Always a devoted husband and father, Herb is survived by his children: Wayne (Karen) Hymes, Vallisa (Jocelyn) Pompey, and Zina Hymes; grandchildren Alina, Xavier, Jana, Erica, and Billy; great-grandchildren Nayshawn and Elias; sisters Margaret (Charles) Pettey of Kingston, NY, Sarah (Al) LaBolita of Kingston, NY, and brother, David (Virginia) Hymes of North Carolina; special cousins, Tracy and Terry Kittle and Taylor Pinto, and a host of dear cousins, nieces, and nephews. Also dear to Herb and mourning his loss are: Arlene (Herb Williams) Gonzales, Maureen Fay, Bob and Lauren Barber, Paul Cornelius, George and Beverly Shuhart, Larry and Jane Scarano. Herb was predeceased by his beloved wife, Doris, his parents, Herbert and Sarah, his brother George, sisters Ruth and Mary, and his in laws, Martha and George Anthony, brother in laws, Joseph and Arnold (Jacqueline) Anthony.
Herb enjoyed life's simple pleasures: time spent with family, Prinzo's Italian bread, McDonald's senior coffee, playing his Daily Numbers, the Annual Retired Firemen's Clambake, the daily Jumble, and his "All My Children." Although small in stature, Herb was a giant among men. A humble humanitarian, always willing to lend a hand to those in need, Herb was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.
