On Tuesday, April 5, 2022, Hermann's five-year wish was realized when he joined his forever love, Betsy, in heaven. He was 93.
He was born in Recklinghausen, Germany in 1928 and came to the U.S. in 1950, settling in Schenectady. He served the U.S. Army during the Korean war as a community liaison/interpreter in Germany.
Working at the Liederkranz Club in Schenectady, Hermann gave a group of ladies a ride home at closing time, first stopping at the Silver Diner on Erie Boulevard. He and Betsy got to know each other and he dropped her off last. Six months later, they were married - a union that lasted 62 years until Betsy's passing in 2017.
Hermann was a dedicated shop foreman at the GE Apparatus Shop in Albany, NY, while Betsy was the manager at home raising their three children. Their mutual love for bowling gave them many years of enjoyment where they made many good friends, especially Donna and Laura.
Betsy's long-term health issues saw Hermann willingly become her only caregiver, never considering it to be a burden. He was determined to keep them together in their home. Her passing in 2017 left him wishing every day to be with her in heaven.
Surviving Hermann are his sons Bill(Lee), David(Kelley) and daughter Lynda(Joao), as well as nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Community Hospice for their long-term care and support, especially nurse Elissa who offered incredible care and compassion, and neighbors Mike Ellrot and Jim Quackenbush for many years of friendship and support that enabled Hermann to remain in his home.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday April 12th at 11am at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie NY 12205.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Hermann's name to Community Hospice 445 New Karner Rd. Albany, NY 12205
