Albany- Hikmet Canver, 74, died on Saturday May 28, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Adana, Turkey, she was the daughter of the late Ibrahim and Azize Mezarci. Hikmet's perseverance, discipline, gifted wisdom, and foresight was what kept her far ahead of her times amid the culturally conservative environment of Turkey where she raised her three sons alone. A devoted mother all her life, Hikmet loved her three sons for whom she succeeded in providing with the highest education despite the obstacles she faced. Her life revolved around her sons and her unconditional love for them. In addition, she was recognized as an Outstanding and Accomplished Turkish Women Award by a daily newspaper of Ankara, Turkey in June of 1988.
Hikmet is the wife of 10 years to the late Cevdet Canver. She is the sister to three predeceased brothers; Bahri, Mithat, and Cevdet and two surviving sisters; Hayriye, and Sevim.
Hikmet leaves behind to cherish her memory her three sons; Yucel (Selma) Canver of Ankara, Turkey, Erol (Astrid) Canver of Herne, Germany and Charles (Renee) Canver of Loudonville, NY. She is also survived by her eight beloved grandchildren; Mizyal, and Izgen of Ankara Turkey, Nilay, and Kai of Herne, Germany, Bethany, Adam, Matthew and John of Loudonville.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.). Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service which will be held on Wednesday at 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 33 Everett Rd., Albany, NY 12205, in memory of Hikmet Canver.
