Hong He, 41, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Ellis hospital after a long battle against breast cancer. Her loving family was by her side.
Hong was born in Jining, Inner Mongolia, China on October 25, 1974, to the family of Zunmin He and Jingqi Yu. She moved to Beijing for middle school. Being an outstanding student throughout middle school and high school, she was accepted into Tsinghua University. She graduated from Tsinghua University in 2001 with bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering. Having achieved excellent academic performance, she was accepted into the doctoral program in chemical engineering at MIT. It was at MIT that she spent some of the best years of her life, fell in love with Yunpeng Yin, and married him in 2005 in the MIT chapel.
After receiving her Doctorate in engineering from MIT, she worked as a postdoc at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she developed a method to synthesize photosensitive catalytic nanoparticles using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. She then moved to Albany to be reunited with Yunpeng and joined IBM as a Research Staff Member. There she worked on process development and then process integration, and was awarded more than 40 patents.
She was the devoted wife of Yunpeng for over 10 years and happily raised their two beautiful daughters, Yueyang Stephanie Yin and Zijia Emily Yin.
In the long battle against breast cancer, she always remained peaceful and positive. She was encouraged by good news and learned to look at the positive sides of bad news. Even in the last several months of her life when she suffered so much emotionally and physically, she kept herself positive and taught her husband and family to stay optimistic and strong.
She enjoyed cooking, reading, traveling, skating, and crochet in her spare time.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday November 1, 2015 at 11:00 am at Newcomer Funeral Home 343 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY. Calling hours will precede the service from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Entombment will be at a later date in China.
Those wishing to remember Hong He in a special way may send a contribution to Brown School, 150 Corlaer Ave, Schenectady, NY 12304.
