ALBANY – Horace James Hammonds, 74, passed away quietly on Monday, October 28, 2013 at home. Born in Smithville, GA, he was the son of the late Arthur and Maggie Hammonds.

Horace served in the United States Marine Corps. He worked for the United States Postal Service for over 12 years and retired with 27 years of service from New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Horace was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Troy.

Horace was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy and Mack Arthur Hammonds, and sister Georgia L. Venson.

Horace will be missed dearly by his wife of 47 years, Katherine M. Hammonds; children Timothy J. Hammonds, Stephanie L. Mills (Gordon) of Atlanta, GA, and Steven M. Hammonds of Schenectady; grandchildren Emanuel, Erik, Amea, Amari, Ahvere, Kevin, Nevets and Micah; nephews, Mack Henderson, Joe Waite, Gary McClain, Randolph Ford and Eric Waite; nieces Maxine Ford, Sondra Reed, Veronica McClain, Constance Bing, Susan Avery, Quione Ford and Renee McConney; special cousin Ernestine Johnson, and several great-nieces, great-nephews and other close relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 12:00 pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 2165 5th Avenue, Troy. Memorial Contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association of NENY, Pine West Plaza, Bldg. 4, Suite 405, Washington Avenue Ext., Albany, NY 12205 in Horace's name.
