Clifton Park - Irene Christophers, 67, loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024 in Albany, NY. Born June 1st in Manhattan, New York, Irene was the firstborn daughter of the late Ramona Emilia and Herbert Christophers. She grew up in Massapequa Park, Long Island with her parents and five siblings: older brother Robert, twins Elizabeth and Betty, and twins Alice and John. Irene attended and graduated from Berner High School, Massapequa, Long Island.
Her corporate career began in New York City’s fashion district, leading Irene to serve over twenty-five years in the Telecommunications Industry. Spearheading Cable Systems all over the continental United States and The Caribbean, Irene eventually earned the title of Vice President of Cable Operations at Centennial Cable in Puerto Rico.
During her time Irene sat on the Board of Directors for the Indiana and the Caribbean Cable and Telecommunications Associations, the Hispanic Business Initiative, and the Tampa Trust. Recognized for her achievements Irene received the Woman of the Year Betsy Magness Leadership Award, the Cable Television of New Jersey Cornerstone Award, and was an Inductee at the National Association of Minorities in Cable Hall of Fame.
Following a 1987 Supreme Court ruling to include women, Irene was the first minority woman to serve in the Rotary club of Washington Township, NJ where she also acted as Treasurer, VP and President Elect. She also served as Treasurer, VP and President Elect for the New Jersey Cable Telecommunications Association.
Irene retired in her early fifties and enjoyed sailing, traveling, and spending time with family. She was an active member of the yukayeke Higuayagua Taíno of the Caribbean. Irene is survived by her daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law Scott Lohr, granddaughters Jessica and Alexandra, and grandsons Scott and Brian.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024 from 3 to 7 PM at NewComer Cremations & Funerals,Watervliet, New York A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the Dominican Republic on a later date to be announced by family.
In lieu of flowers Irene’s family requests that texts, messages, calls or hugs be sent out or given to let a loved one know they’re being thought about.
