LATHAM – Dr. Jogindar S. Uppal, age 88, died Monday, August 31, 2015, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Dr. Uppal was born in Lahore on January 16, 1927, and moved to the Punjab after the partition. He was an educator at the Government colleges in Ludhiana, Patiala and Faridkot, before coming to the USA in 1959 to pursue his Ph. D in Economics at the University of Minnesota. After receiving his doctorate in 1965, he had a long and successful career as Professor of Economics at the University of Hawaii, Michigan State University, and, since 1967, at the State University of New York in Albany, where he was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor. He retired in 2012. He had also spent many summer months in Indonesia, Pune (India) and Papua New Guinea as a Lecturer and researcher. He is heavily published in the area of Economics of Underdeveloped Countries, and he has several awards and honors from across the world.
Dr. Uppal was a long term resident of the Capital District, and left his mark on the local Indian community. He was one of the earliest Indian resident of the capital district, and he served as mentor to countless families who came to the area. He will be missed by all. He was a founder of the Tri City India Association. He was also a founder of the Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Temple in Niskayuna.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Pritam Uppal, and a large extended family. This includes his three children, Paul (Pinky) Uppal of Loudonville, Inderjit (Frank) Barone of Latham, Jack (Kate) Uppal of Lincoln, California, grandchildren Paul (Rabia) Uppal of Vestal, New York, PJ Uppal of Watervliet, Anita (Anthony) Barone of South Carolina, Frank Barone of Latham, and Rebecca Uppal of Lincoln, California. He will also be missed by his two great-grandchildren, Devan and Ashiana Uppal. He is also survived by two brothers and their families.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 7 PM to 9 PM at the New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie, NY 12205, 518-456-4442. All family and friends are welcome to attend. Cremation will be held on Thursday morning at 11 AM in the Gardner Earl Chapel and Crematory, 186 Oakwood Avenue, Troy, NY 12180, 518-272-7520.
