James J. Almy, Sr.

GUILDERLAND - James J. Almy Sr., 87, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2020 at St. Peter's Hospice Inn.

James was born on July 12, 1933 in Selkirk and was the son of the late Albert F. and Catherine L. (VanDenburgh) Almy.

James went to work for the New York Central Railroad in 1948. In 1953, he was drafted to serve in the United States Navy and spent four years on the CVA47 Philippian Sea. Upon returning home he returned to the NY Central Railroad in 1958, where he remained with them as they transitioned to Penn Central and finally as Conrail where he retired in 1990 as a trainmaster after 42 years. He also drove school bus for Voorheesville Central Schools from 1962 to 1976 and later worked for the Town of Guilderland Senior Transportation Department. James was known for his extensive collection of beautiful stained glass lamps.

In addition to his parents, James is predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Dorothy (Edwards) Almy; and his siblings, Albert Almy, John Almy and Ruth Hilton.

James is survived by his son, James J. (Annette) Almy Jr.; his daughter, Suzanne Joslin; his sister, Dorothy McClelland; nine grandchildren, Rebecca (Chris) Derway, Tanya (Keith) Callahan, Michael Almy, William Joslin IV, James (Juanita) Almy III, Jack Almy, Stacy (Chris) Neary, Courtney Hoffman and Robert Hoffman; four great grandchildren, Ian Derway, Izabela Derway, Caleb Callahan and Landon Neary and several nieces and nephews.

As per James' wishes, there will be no services.
