COLONIE – James B. Barrett, 83, died peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar.
James was born on September 26, 1922 in New York City and was the son of the late Kathryn (Cannon) and James B. Barrett Sr.
James served in the US Army during WWII with the 35th Division 320 Infantry, attaining the rank of First Sergeant.
James moved upstate in 1975 and retired from the Albany Post Office in 1978, where he served as a PAR Counselor (program of alcoholic counselor). He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, a 22 year member of the American Legion, where he served as Post Commander for two years at Post # 102 in NYC and seven years at Post #0166 in Coxsackie, and a member of the Silver Streakers in Colonie. He also delivered Meals on Wheels in Coxsackie.
James is survived by his wife, Helen T. (Howard) Barrett; four children Peggy (Gus) Rech of Briar Cliff, Joan Barrett of Mount Vernon, Jaime B. (John) Fallarino of Schenectady and Gregory J. Barrett of Albany. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Christopher King, Kerry King, Tara Fallarino, Veronica Fallarino, Matthew McGee, Helen McGee and one great granddaughter, Gavriella King. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, especially his niece, Mary Ann Sherry. He was predeceased by his sisters, Gloria Flannery, and Pat O'Brien, and a brother, Joseph Barrett.
The family would like to thank all of the staff on the "B" wing at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home for the care and friendship that they extended to James during his stay there.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 9:30a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church 26 Wilson Ave. in Colonie. Calling hours will be held at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.) on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center 125 Rockefeller Road, Delmar, NY 12054 or to the Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard Association 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871 in memory of James B. Barrett.
