SARATOGA SPRINGS - Deacon James “Jimmy” Boxley, 94, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024. In his passing he was surrounded by family and the wonderful staff at the Wesley Community Center.
He was born on September 6, 1929 in Scottsburg, VA to the late John H and Selina (Logan) Boxley.
In 1948, Deacon Boxley moved from Virginia to Coeymans, NY to work at the Brickyard. He was immediately hired. After living in Coeymans, for about a year, he joined the Riverview Missionary Baptist Church.
In 1952 he was called into the Armed Forces. Deacon Boxley served for two years and during his stay, he fought in the Korean War. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and rececived an honorable dicharge in 1954. When Deacon Boxley returned from the Army, he reunited with the Riverview Church Family and became a walking Deacon. He was also hired back at the Brickyard.
In 1956, Deacon Boxley married Pearl Brewer and was blessed with 3 beautiful children, Robin, Michael and Steven. Deacon Boxley is also blessed with 5 loving grandchildren.
In 1970, he was ordained as a Deacon. He continued working at the Brickyard until 1973 at which time he left the Brickyard and formed his own business, Boxley's Polishing Services at Marshal's Automotive Dealership.
In 1975, Deacon Boxley became Chairman of the Deacon Board which he held until 2008. He also served as the Chairman of the Trustee Board and worked in other various groups of the church such as the Finance Committee and as the Chairman of the Pulpit Committee. Riverview has truly been blessed with the services that Deacon Boxley has provided. Deacon James thereafter joined the Macedonia Baptist Church as a member and Deacon Emeritus.
He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl A. Boxley after 50 years of marriage; his brother, Reverend John Arthur(Maddie) Boxley; his sisters, Rev. Frances Warton of Chicago, Il and Rev Agnes Granderson of Richmond, VA.
Deacon Boxley is survived by his children; Michael (Karen), Robin, Steven (Michele) Boxley; his grandchildren, Edwin, Carl, Charde, Christian and Autumn and great grand children; Jordan and Allurah. He is survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; his sisters in law; Inez Steven, Patricia Brewer, Shelia (Bob) Hughes and Theresa Brewer and brother in law-Alfonzo (Carmen) Brewer.
Visitation will be held from 9:30am to 10:30am immediately followed by the Homegoing service at 10:30am on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Macedonia Baptist Church, 26 Wilson Ave, Albany, NY. Interment will follow at Grove Cemetery in Coeymans, NY.
