NISKAYUNA, NY – James H. Schwartz, 70, former resident of Albany and Largo, FL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at his residence in Niskayuna. Born May 27, 1938 in Ithaca, Jim was the son of the late Colonel James P. and Marion H. Schwartz. He moved to Florida in 1954 with his family and graduated from Northeast High School in St. Petersburg in 1956. He was a 1960 graduate of the Hotel and Restaurant Administration program at Michigan State University. Jim was commissioned a second lieutenant through the ROTC program at MSU and served in the artillery program of the U.S. Army following graduation until 1962.
Jim managed the Tom Sawyer Motor Inn on Western Avenue in Albany from 1964 to 1992. During that time, he was active in the Albany Chamber of Commerce, the Skal Club, and was a member and past president of the New York State Hotel and Motel Association. An avid golfer, Jim was an active member of Wolfert's Roost Country Club for many years. He retired to Florida in 1993, where he continued his golfing activities at Palm Hill Country Club in Largo.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife of 43 years, Susan, in 2003. He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Margaret Cornish and her husband Bill of Saginaw, MI; one son, James Schwartz and his wife Caroline of Guilderland; two sisters, Marjory Schwartz of Largo, FL and Virginia Chambers and her husband Bob of Seminole, FL; one brother-in-law, David Ladd and his wife Ann, of Cadillac, MI; and six grandchildren, David, Matthew and Michael Cornish and Christopher, Andrea and Nicholas Schwartz.
Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will precede the service from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Clearwater, FL.
