Latham – James H. Scymanky, 89, passed away Friday December 18, 2009 peacefully at home.
James was born in Ravena, NY, the son of the late Edward and Gertrude Duffy-Scymanky and was a lifelong area resident. He was educated at St. Joseph's Academy and Albany High School and attended University of Tulane. He proudly served in the US Navy during WW II and had the dubious distinction of being sunk in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the latter after the island of Okinawa was secured. He also served on the USS Greene APD 36, the 1st American warship to sail up the Nagasaki River into the rubble of that city after the bomb of August 9, 1945. James played on several semi-pro baseball teams, including Tobin First Prize and the New York Centrals. He was an avid golfer, who was very proud of the 68, he shot from way back tees at Schenectady Municipal on father's day 1964 and a 37 year member of the Handicappers Golf League and at one stretch appeared for 25 years without an absence. James was the sole owner and operator of Jim's Scale Works for 50 years, among his many accounts were A & P Tea Co., Hyucks Felt Mill, Adirondack Foundries and Fort Orange Paper Co.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years Marianne E. (Janocha) Scymanky, loving daughters: Diane (Tom) Redmond, Christine Rinella, Barbara Scymanky and Marianne Scymanky-Bardin, grandchildren: James Rinella and Michael (Amber) Rinella, great-grandchildren Mykennan and Jamesyn Rinella, sister Gloria Potter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by siblings: John Scymanky, Gertrude Murphy and Patricia Bylancik.

Funeral service will be Tuesday 9:00am from New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie then to Our Lady of Assumption Church, Latham, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am. Calling hours are Monday 4:00 to 7:00pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.
