James J. Hunter, 89, of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2023 at Ellis Residential & Rehab Center.
The oldest of 3 children, Jim was born in Albany on May 6, 1934 to Kenneth and Josephine (Durand) Hunter.
Jim attended Cathedral Academy and Christian Brothers Academy (class of 1952) and went on to earn a Master's Degree in Materials Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After a brief military assignment, Jim began his career as an engineer with General Electric Co. and then moved on to Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, where he held a number of managerial positions before retiring in 1991. He was heavily involved in community activities, volunteering his time for the benefit of the Elfun Society, Proctors Theater and Sunnyview Hospital.
Jim was a very generous individual; donating heavily to non-profits and charitable causes. He loved to talk to people and could speak on practically any subject. All who knew Jim enjoyed his wit and wonderful sense of humor. Golf was one of his main hobbies and he held memberships with the Edison Club and the Mohawk Club. He also enjoyed woodworking, home repair projects and automobile maintenance.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife Gloria (Foy), sister Mary Jane (Kretzler) and brother Kenneth. He is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jim's family would like to thank Edie, Joe and Jeff at Independent Seniors for their kindness and companionship over the last several years.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 11am in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.
