Colonie – James T. Kennedy, 77, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 with his loving family by his side.
Jim was born in Bronx, New York in 1940. The family moved to Baltimore, MD in 1949, where he began his formal education: attended Kenwood HS, Essex, MD; was President of the Student Council, played Varsity Soccer, Basketball & Baseball; was recipient of the Highest Athletic Award and inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim received a scholarship to Loyola College where his success continued: Who's Who in Colleges & Universities, distinguished military graduate, Alpha Sigma NU (Jesuit Honor Society), Varsity Soccer, Basketball & Baseball, Captain of the Soccer & Baseball teams, All Mason Dixon in Soccer, President of the Athletic Association, recipient of the Highest Athletic Award, and graduated in 1962.
Before entering the US Army, Jim worked for Balto, Co., as a School Recreation Center Director. Jim married his high school classmate and sweetheart, Thelma R. Ziegler.
Jim served in Vietnam and achieved the rank of Captain. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal (Meritorious Service), the Valorous Unit Commendation & Meritorious Unit Citation.
Jim began his civilian work career at The Research Foundation of SUNY. Later his major endeavor was working for NEU Day Salon Services where he became Top Sales Manager. During the next 30 years, Jim had a variety of successful small businesses. Jim finished his working career with NY State Unemployment Insurance.
Jim was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church for over 40 years. He ran the Food Pantry for more than a decade, ushered and did a number of support activities.
Although he was an only child, Thelma and Jim had 5 children, James W. Kennedy (killed in a tragic accident 9/25/1985), Shannon, Jeanne (Vince) Pashuta, Laurel, and Jon (Kimberly) Kennedy; 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Thelma and Jim celebrated over 54 years of marriage.
More important than all these achievements, Jim was a devoted Christian, great husband, father and grandfather.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 63 Mountain View Av., Colonie. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 9:00 am at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens, Colonie.
