COLONIE – James P. Urso, 67, of Colonie, passed away peacefully on Saturday at his home surrounded by his loving family following a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Frances Comparetta Urso and brother of the late Joe Urso. From a young age, Jim worked with his parents, who owned and operated the Metro Diner on Broadway in Albany. Eventually, Jim took over after the onset of his Dad's illness and finally closed the Metro in 1985. He loved the restaurant business and co-owned several others throughout the years with the last being Jim's TakeOut. He also worked for DHL couriers until becoming ill in 2000.
Jim enjoyed vacationing in Wildwood and the Islands with his family, treasuring early morning walks on the beach. He loved to cook big Italian dishes at his home for his family and friends. Jim most important love was for his family, especially his children. He taught his children the importance of education, hard work and character. Jim was also a practical joker who loved to make people laugh.
Left to cherish his fond memories is his loving wife, Debbie, his son James Jr., his daughter Nicole, his daughter Suzanne (John) Cocca and his grandchildren Danielle, Matt, Samantha, Jeffrey and great grandson Lucas James. He is also survived by his mother in law June Avellino and his favorite sister in law Lori Dessingue, whom found strength to laugh, cry and help care for him through his long journey. Survivors also include his son Kevin, daughters Laurie and Kelly (Lance) Endres and grandchildren, MaCaulay, Kahlia, Sophia and Adison; sister in law Maria Sartorio, brothers in law Philip (Susan) and Louis (Kathleen) Avellino, Ed Dessingue and Lee Dickinson. Several loving nieces, nephews and cousins survive as well as best friends Rocky Prinzo, Joe Benkert, and the Gabriel and Hickey families.
The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to the hospice staff, Nettie, Adrienne, Sara and Joel who gave extraordinary care, compassion and concern throughout Jim's illness.
