Guilderland~
It is with great sadness that the family of James R. Porter Sr. (Jim), 72, announce his passing on December 19, 2017, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center. Born on December 30, 1944, Jim grew up and lived most of his life in Albany, attending St. James School and Vincentian Institute before serving his country honorably and faithfully in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. As a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local # 724/236, Jim was passionate, dedicated, and diligent about his career and his union. In addition, Jim spent many years instructing electricians at the Capital Region BOCES Electrical Trade School. Jim's passions included fishing, the Yankees, the Colonie Elks, and in his later years becoming an avid internet searcher. Jim was fond of doing things the right way, following the rules, and proud to have never received a speeding ticket.
Jim was the son of the late John and Genevieve (Audet) Porter. Surviving are his three children, daughter Tracy (Porter) Martone and husband Charles Martone of Guilderland, son James Porter Jr. and wife Jennifer Porter of Rowley, MA, and son Shaun Porter of Albany; and five grandchildren, Molly and Brady Martone of Guilderland, Bryce, Colin, and Josie Porter of Rowley MA. Jim is also survived by his four dearest siblings, Sister Carol Anne Porter, C.S.J. of Latham, John (Jack) J. Porter and wife Catherine Porter of Delmar, William (Bill) Porter and wife Carol Porter of Poughkeepsie, and Jean E. Porter of Albany. Jim was especially grateful for his youngest sister Jean who was tremendously caring and loving of her brother. In addition, Jim is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, his former wife Deborah Porter of Guilderland, and life-long friends that date back to his days growing up in the Ten Eyck/Whitehall Road area of Albany.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, on Tuesday December 26, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday December 27th at 10:30 am at St. Francis of Assisi Parish (formerly St. James), 391 Delaware Ave, Albany. Interment with military honors will follow the mass in Gerald B.H. Solomon - Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
