James Ward Marx Sr.

SCHENECTADY - James Ward Marx Sr., 75, passed away on July 29, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Jim was stricken suddenly on Sunday, July 28th while doing what he loved best, working his booth at the New Lebanon Flea Market which he has done for the past 30 years. He was known to many as, "The Dollar Guy."

Born on May 10, 1938, he was the son of the late George and Barbara (Martin) Marx. Jim was a life time resident of the Schenectady area to where he owned and operated several businesses to include: Jim's Canteen and Mary's News and Novelty. He also owned several variety stores during the 70's and 80's. For 25 years he owned Commercial Caterers where he managed the operation of 7 coffee trucks that served food to job sites all over the capital district. He owned Bargains Galore and sold new dollar items at flea markets well before the familiar stores had opened.

He was the owner of the famous #3NY modified stock cars that raced for years at the Fonda and Malta Speedways at the guidance of his friend and racing idol, the late Pete Corey, and his driver, the late Eddie Pieniazek. Together they won many features and set track records all over NY State. Jim was a proud member of the NYS Stock Car Association.

Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, playing poker, working flea markets, attending stock car races, and going to auctions. He especially enjoyed helping his auctioneer son-in-law, Dan Blyth run his business. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching Jeopardy, wrestling, and Sanford and Son.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary (De Varnne) Marx; his loving children, Brenda (John) Fusco, Lisa (Danny) Blyth, Kelly (Dick) Blyth, Tonya (Jim) Woods, and his favorite son, James (Colleen) Marx Jr.; his cherished grandchildren, Rob, Ryan, and Megan Marx, Kaitlynn, Christopher, and Tessa Blyth, Hillary and Alley Blyth, Jimmy, Kristen, and Robby Woods, and Brittney Fusco; step-grandchildren, Jason and Joey Zeledon; his sister, Patricia Overbaugh, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, and his close friends, Mike Woods, Alan Dake, Billy Pieniazek, and Mark Pickford. A special thanks goes out to you guys.

He was predeceased by his brother, Bud Marx; his sisters, Helen Evens and June Taninies, and his best friend, Frank DeVencenzo.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd, Colonie. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Schenectady.
