"If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less,
Keep me in your heart for a while " - Warren Zevon
Colonie- James Joseph Zayac, 75, of Colonie, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 18. Jimmy, as he was known, was a music and art lover, world traveler, and a beloved Father, Grandfather, Uncle and friend. He retired in 2001 after spending 35 years working as a computer operator for New York State. In retirement, he pursued his true passions; travel, golf, music, supporting the New York Jets, and spending time with family and friends.
Jimmy loved to travel, and through the years visited Italy, Denmark, Spain, France, Portugal, and more. He made friends everywhere he went, as he was known to talk to anyone and everyone. His love of music and travel merged well, and his favorite trip was an annual pilgrimage to the Chicago Blues Festival. Jessica Zayac-Calarco, his only child, has fond memories of attending many concerts with her Dad. Favorites were Joan Armatrading, Warren Zevon, The Rolling Stones, The Band, and a special evening spent at "The Barn" at Levon Helms' studio. Jessica and her father were always close, and their bond remains unbroken.
Jimmy was a caring and dedicated grandparent to Noah and Mason, who adored him. He had a special bond with each of them and was an integral part of their lives, proudly cheering them on in all their varied pursuits. They miss their Grandpa dearly.
He had fierce ideals when it came to politics and was always up for fiery and intelligent discussions. This passion for debate was balanced with his gentle and loving manner when it came to all creatures great and small, and Jimmy never meet a dog he didn't like.
He is survived by his former wife and lifelong friend, Georgene "Jeanie" Utter, nieces, nephews and many close friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Ben and Esther Zayac, his brother, Benjamin Zayac, and his grandchildren, Carter and Dylan Calarco.
A celebration of life will take place Monday, September 27, from 4-6 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY. A service will begin at 6pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the charity Autism Speaks. Information may be found at autismspeaks.org.
