RAVENA-Jane W. Granich, 95, of Ravena passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at St. Peter's Hospital following an illness. She was born in Albany the daughter of the late Robert S. and Agnes Raymond Woods. She had resided in Albany for half of her life and Ravena for 45 years. Jane received an Associate's Degree from Albany Business School in Business Management. She was employed by Albany County Dept. of Social Services as an administrative aide. Jane was also employed with NYS Liquor Authority and was number 36 to be hired for the NYS Thruway Authority when it first opened.
She was a lieutenant in the Canteen with the Red Cross, helping to supply troops with various supplies during WWII. Jane was an award winning unit leader for Stanley Home Products Company for over 20 years, earning a trip to the Caribbean. She was a tournament level tennis player, accomplished equestrian, assistant swimming instructor for the Red Cross, avid gardener, a voracious reader, and a member of the Hadley-Luzerne Historical Society.
Jane was a fan of Big Band music of the 1940's. She met and received autographs of many prominent band leaders of that era. She loved animals from all walks of life. Jane also enjoyed red shoes, the artist Frederic Remington, white cars with powerful V8 engines and acoustic songs by Eric Clapton. She was a frequent contributor to a dozen charitable organizations and was generous and compassionate towards anyone she met. She also adored the Adirondack Mountains, in which she spent 17 consecutive summers as a young woman. It was in Lake Luzerne that she was fortunate to be able to save a young girl from drowning.
She is the loving mother of John P. Granich of Ravena; cousin of Charles R. (Phyllis) Nichols and their children, Charles, Jr. and Jonathan, of Philmont; and several cousins in Rochester and Ogdensburg.
In addition to her parents, Jane was predeceased by her brother, Chief Petty Officer John S. Woods, USN Ret.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00am on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Albany.
A memorial banquet will be held in her honor in October at a day and time to be announced.
