Janet Christensen

September 1, 1947 — September 15, 2022

Voorheesville – Janet Christensen, 75, passed away at her home on September 15, 2022 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. A natural caregiver, Janet spent most of her professional career working as a nurse with the Albany County Health Department. Off duty, Janet cared for her parents in their final years, regularly lent a sympathetic ear to friends and relatives and, after her daughter left home, gave up that anticipated empty nest to provide a permanent home for her brother.

But her greatest accomplishment and joy was being a grandmother. Even when separated by state lines or oceans, Janet maintained a close relationship with Kaitlyn, Mia and Noah through an onslaught of snack boxes, cards, phone calls and visits. She even overcame an inaptitude for technology, learning to email, text and FaceTime to ensure regular updates and dish out the occasional guilt trip. She died surrounded by family photos and drawers filled with every received letter, drawing, school photo and macaroni necklace.

Stories related to her execrable cooking skills, fierce independence, sarcasm, voracious love of reading and inability to terminate a FaceTime call ("There is no End button!") will be repeatedly recounted with laughter and eye rolls. It's impossible to adequately encapsulate 75 years in a few paragraphs, but the most important point to note is that Janet loved unconditionally. And she was very much loved in return.

Along with her grandchildren, Janet is survived by her daughter Erin Seligman (Aaron) of England and brothers Chris of Voorheesville and Norman (Margaret) of Virginia. A short graveside ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.
