Cohoes - Janet T. DeGroff, 90, of Ballston Lake, died on March 31, 2014 at Eddy Village Green in Cohoes, NY. She was the daughter of the late John Edward Teiper and Laura Newton and was the loving wife of the late Edward L. DeGroff Jr.
Janet was born in East Aurora, NY, grew up in Pittsford and Troy, NY and was a proud graduate of Lansingburgh High School and Mildred Elly School. Jan and Ed raised their family in Guilderland and then, in retirement, they enjoyed seventeen years in the glorious Yampa River Valley of northwest Colorado residing in Janet's beloved Steamboat Springs before moving to Ballston Lake.She had a brief, wartime secretarial career at the Travelers Insurance Company in Albany before following her true calling, making a warm home for her family filled with the handmade treasures she created. Janet lived a life of simplicity and grace surrounding her family with books, music, hand sewn quilts and clothes, hand-knitted garments often made with her own hand spun yarn, gardens and flower arrangements. Her designs were often influenced by her love of nature and observations made on her almost daily walks.
Janet is survived by her five children, Mary (Robert Knizek) of Ballston Lake, NY, Thomas and Edward (Anne) of Steamboat Springs, CO, Michael (Diane) of Truckee, CA, and Jack (Jacquie) of Harwich, MA. Janet treasured her grandchildren Susan, Rory(Alex), Katie(Mike), Maggie(Greg), Dusty(Liz), Tim, Britt, Dylan, Cody, and Hillary and her great grandchildren, Austin, Averly, and Carson. She is also survived by her many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Janet was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Betty, Bud, Peg, Fred, and Jack.
