TROY-Janis “Jan” T. Pedersen, 85, of North Greenbush, died Wednesday morning, November 6, 2024, at Riverside Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Castleton, NY, after a long illness. Jan was born at Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, NY. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Helen Thompson. 

She was a graduate of Salem Academy in Salem, NY, and then graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh. Jan worked as an elementary school teacher in the Niskayuna Central School District and then at the Troy Public Library. Jan was an accomplished musician and served as the organist for local churches for many years. 

In addition to her parents, Jan was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, John W. Pedersen; sisters Carol T. Brown and Donna T. Mengel; and several brother and sister-in-laws. 

Jan is survived by her cherished daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Michael Garcia of Castleton; and grandchildren Mackenzie, Montana, and Michael Garcia, as well as nieces and nephews. She also is remembered by long-time friends and neighbors. 

Jan was a member of Third Presbyterian Church in Troy. She loved spending time with family and seeing her grandchildren grow and play sports. In her younger years, she and John loved traveling and enjoyed eating out while trying new cuisines and restaurants. She also loved to read and watch British dramas. 

At her request, there will be no calling hours or services. 

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, Heifer International, or to the charity of your choice.
