Jeanine Louise Colen, aged 93, passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at Daughters of Sarah Senior Community. Jeanine was born on January 29, 1923, in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., the daughter of John Kelly Sr. and Louise Kelly.
A graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, Jeanine enlisted with the WAVES, a division of the U.S. Navy, in April 1943. She attended Yeoman School in Cedar Falls, Iowa and was stationed for a time in New York City before transferring for the majority of her service in Washington, D.C. as "Yeoman Chief Acting". She received an honorable discharge in June of 1948. A proud veteran, Jeanine's photo and bio are part of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.
Jeanine married Vincent D. Colen of Albany, N.Y. in 1952 and remained married until his death in 1999.
Jeanine is survived by her brother, John J. Kelly, Jr, 95, of Alexandria, VA and sons John, Stephen, and Thomas; and his fiancée Kathleen Stanton who had become like a daughter to her. Her sister-in-law Rita Kelly preceded her in death last year. She also leaves behind niece Pam and nephews John and Patrick Kelly.
A wake will be held at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road in Colonie on Thursday August 18, 2016 from 4pm-7pm with a private graveside service the next day at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank all those who cared for Jeanine during her illness at St. Peter's Hospital and Daughters of Sarah.
