Waterford ~Jeanne (Kestens) Cooney passed away on August 17, 2021 after a brief illness. She was born on August 8, 1951 in Leuven, Belgium. She emigrated to the United States in 1955 with her parents, the late Raymond and Mai (Raid) Kestens.
Jeanne was an avid reader, a fierce cribbage player, and half of the winning pitch team Burdick & Cooney. She adored flamingos and Christmas. Jeanne loved spending time with her nephews going to demolition derbies, movies, and playing games. In recent years she developed a love for cruising. Jeanne had two men in her life: Gus & Gary, also known as the furry kids. She enjoyed volunteering at the United Church of Cohoes, especially for the kids' program. Jeanne was a Program Manager at the Center for Disability Services for 28 years. She worked at the Consaul Road group home where she was a strong advocate for the individuals living there and worked hard to keep the program running smoothly. Above all, Jeanne was a kind, loving woman with a great sense of humor.
Jeanne will be missed by many people including her sisters Judy Davis (who introduced her to the craft of cross stitching) and Jessica Kestens (her roommate and perpetual companion). She leaves behind her nephews Jarrod and Travis Constantino, her brother-in-law Michael Davis, and his brother Harry Davis. Jeanne's besties Pamela Burdick & Ann Sweener were her partners in adventure & playing cards. She is also survived by her Uncle Walter Kojalo; cousins Jacob, Peter and Matthew Kojalo; the Kitzrow family of Irene, Chris, and Nicholas; the Coonrad family of Laura, Rich, Natalie, and Noah; and Timothy Hobin.
Jeanne has gone to the loving arms of Jesus. She will be missed now but Our Savior has ensured we will be with our happy little elf again one day. Jeanne reunites with her parents and other beloved family members including Tante Inge Kojalo, Tante Aita Ilves, Tante Hilda Raid and Uncle Kaljo Raid.
A memorial service will be held on August 28, 2021, 1:00pm, at the United Church of Cohoes, 123 Mohawk St., Cohoes, NY. A memorial donation to the church or any animal shelter in her name would be a great way to honor her legacy.
